SONR et Tayogo

SONR vs Tayogo T8 + W24T: Which Swim Coach Communication System Is Better for Teams?

Real-time communication can completely change a swim training session. Instead of waiting until the swimmer reaches the wall, a coach can correct stroke timing, pacing, turns and technique while the athlete is still moving.

Two systems built for this job are SONR Coach and Tayogo T8 + W24T. Both deliver one-way coach-to-swimmer voice communication, but they are designed around different priorities.

SONR focuses on a compact, lightweight receiver and a simple dedicated coaching experience. Tayogo T8 + W24T is designed as a scalable team communication system with 16 selectable channels, multi-swimmer packages and longer-range team use.

This comparison looks at the differences that matter most for private coaches, swim schools, clubs and larger training programs.

How the Two Systems Work

SONR Coach

SONR uses a coach transmitter and a small bone-conduction receiver worn by the swimmer. The coach speaks in real time and the swimmer hears instruction without stopping at the wall.

One of SONR’s strongest advantages is the physical receiver itself. At around 30 g and approximately 61 × 16 mm, it is compact and designed to sit securely with the swimmer. For coaches who care primarily about minimal receiver size, this is a meaningful advantage.

Tayogo T8 + W24T

Tayogo uses the T8 professional radio transmitter on the coach side and one or more waterproof W24T bone-conduction receivers on the athlete side.

The coach selects one of 16 channels on the T8. Every W24T receiver in that training group is set to the same channel. When the coach speaks using push-to-talk or Voice Control, all matched swimmers hear the same instruction.

Difference #1: Receiver Size vs Team-System Design

SONR has the advantage if your first priority is a very small and light receiver. Its approximately 30 g receiver is smaller than the W24T and is clearly designed around minimal drag and a compact swimming form factor.

Tayogo takes a different approach. W24T is a full bone-conduction receiver designed not just for an individual swimmer, but as part of a scalable radio communication system.

That makes the choice less about which receiver is smaller and more about what kind of training system you want to build.

Choose SONR if compact receiver size is the priority. Choose Tayogo if team organization, group scalability and channel control matter more.

Difference #2: 16 Channels Can Matter in a Busy Pool

For a private coach working with one swimmer, channel management may not matter much. For a club with several coaches, lanes and training groups, it can matter a lot.

Tayogo T8 provides 16 selectable channels. A club can organize training like this:

  • Coach A → Channel 1 → Sprint group
  • Coach B → Channel 2 → Distance group
  • Coach C → Channel 3 → Technique group

This helps reduce cross-group confusion in busy facilities and makes T8 + W24T easier to scale across a structured swim program.

Difference #3: One Coach, Multiple Swimmers

Tayogo is intentionally sold in scalable configurations. One T8 can transmit to multiple W24T receivers set to the same channel.

Current team configurations include:

  • 1 + 1 — private coaching
  • 1 + 2 — coach plus two swimmers
  • 1 + 5 — small-group training
  • 1 + 10 — club/team training
  • 1 + 20 — larger programs

Additional receivers can be added as a program grows. That scalability is one of Tayogo’s strongest advantages for swim schools and clubs buying equipment as a team rather than as an individual swimmer.

Difference #4: Communication Range

SONR publishes an open-water receiving distance of approximately 300 m and a pool receiving distance above 50 m at up to about 1 m underwater.

Tayogo publishes W24T reception of up to approximately 500 m in suitable open conditions.

These numbers should not be interpreted as guaranteed underwater distance. Radio performance changes significantly with water depth, obstacles, pool construction, antenna position and local interference.

For practical pool coaching, the more important question is whether the system covers the training environment reliably. For larger pools, open-water work and water-sports coaching where the athlete may move farther away, Tayogo’s higher stated open-condition range provides additional headroom.

Difference #5: Battery Life

SONR states up to approximately 3.5 hours of mixed receiver use and about 1.5 hours of talk time.

W24T is designed for approximately 4–8 hours of use, depending on operating conditions.

For a private lesson, either can be sufficient. For a swim school running multiple sessions in one day, longer receiver runtime can reduce charging interruptions and simplify equipment rotation.

Difference #6: Private Coach vs Club Infrastructure

This is probably the most important distinction between the two products.

SONR feels like a dedicated communication tool for a coach and swimmer. Tayogo T8 + W24T is designed more like a team communication platform.

The 16-channel architecture, multi-receiver packages and ability to organize several training groups make Tayogo particularly well suited to:

  • swim clubs
  • swim schools
  • university and college teams
  • triathlon programs
  • open-water training groups
  • surf and water-sports coaching

What SONR Does Better

A fair comparison should make SONR’s strengths clear.

  • Smaller, lighter receiver: around 30 g.
  • Simple dedicated concept: easy to understand and focused specifically on coach communication.
  • Strong private-coaching fit: especially attractive where minimal receiver size is important.
  • Published pool-specific range: SONR provides a clear pool-distance figure in its specifications.

For a coach who wants a compact device for one swimmer or a small number of athletes, SONR remains a strong option.

Where Tayogo T8 + W24T Stands Out

  • 16 selectable channels for organized multi-group training.
  • 1–20+ receiver scalability from private lessons to large teams.
  • Up to approximately 500 m open-condition reception under suitable conditions.
  • Longer receiver battery life for repeated training sessions.
  • IPX8 W24T receiver built for swimming and water training.
  • Team-oriented purchasing options rather than a one-size-fits-all package.
  • Competitive team pricing for clubs equipping multiple swimmers.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose SONR if:

  • You want the smallest possible receiver.
  • You mainly coach one swimmer or small private sessions.
  • You prefer a simple, dedicated swimming communication product.

Choose Tayogo T8 + W24T if:

  • You run a swim club, school or organized team.
  • You need several swimmers to hear one coach at the same time.
  • You want separate channels for different coaches or training groups.
  • You need a system that can scale from 1 swimmer to 20+.
  • You want longer receiver runtime and higher stated open-condition range.
  • Team purchase value matters.

Final Verdict

SONR and Tayogo solve the same fundamental coaching problem, but they are optimized for different buyers.

SONR is compelling for coaches who prioritize an exceptionally compact receiver and straightforward private-coaching use.

Tayogo T8 + W24T is the stronger fit when the requirement expands from one swimmer to an organized team. Its 16 channels, scalable receiver packages and team-focused architecture make it particularly suitable for clubs, swim schools and larger training programs.

If your goal is not simply to coach one swimmer, but to build a communication system that can grow with your program, T8 + W24T deserves a closer look.
